My painting transcends realism toward impressionism to convey a feeling about its subject matter.

My goal is to capture the essence of my subject in a brush stroke or with the scrape of the pallete knife, to push the colors to say something more and to enhance the lighting to give mood and feeling to the objects. Sometimes, letting the underpainting show through shows where it all began. Or, scumbling will create interesting texture on an object.

A painting must work at many levels, have interesting areas that function up close and yet have depth at a distance.

A painting should have little surprises for the repeat viewer. Spontaneity needs to be juxtaposed against the structure of a composition that has a key area of interest. Repetition moves the eye through the work and yet variety keeps it interesting.

A great painting is a delicate balance of paradoxes that breaks some rules to make a statement.
